An extraordinary number of Australian laws now infringe basic democratic standards, but we hardly bat an eyelid.
Just for the record, I’ve been saying this for a couple of years. Lethargy and apathy mean that little is done to oppose the imposition of draconian laws, and the federal opposition is hopeless at best, and complicit at worst.
Problem is, it’s very rare that once something is in the statute books that it is ever taken. We lose a right, then likely it’s lost forever.
You would expect this trend to slow now that we have a more moderate and sensible PM in the office, but there’s still a hard right wedge of the Libs who see too much control as not enough. These are the times we live in.
It’s time for you and me to be more aware of what is being done to our rights; to be more critical of the hogwash being fed us to justify it; and to actively stand and oppose. We’re good at that when it’s a big ticket issue, but all the while these little amendments whittle away at our rights without anyone seemingly aware of it. Time to change that.
